Kia Ora and Welcome

This is the fifth election that ECO, Forest and Bird, Federated Mountain Clubs and Greenpeace have combined to promote good environmental policies to political parties, members, the public and officials. This year we will again be asking political parties to say whether they support or not these policies. Results of the questionnaire and a comparison of the parties policies will be update on this web site. The groups will also be commenting on party policies as they are released.

Past performance:
Before the last election the groups published the "Environmental Charter 1999" and asked all the major parties to commit to the policies that we had developed. Since then, ECO has pressed for the policies in the charter and have raised them with both officials and Ministers. It is timely that we take a look to see how the government has performed. [ Download 1999 Summary ] ECO gives the government a mixed report card - with some notable achievements and some significant disappointments. The disappointments largely reflect the anti-environmental stance of some in the Cabinet, election year jitters, bureaucratic inertia or down-right opposition to Ministerial wishes, and in one case, a Minister who has felt apparently no sense of commitment to either the policies or to environmental group aspirations.
